CHW Apprenticeship Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How long is the apprenticeship program?

A. The total hours for the program range from 2,000 – 2,200 hours. If the CHW apprentice has already completed an approved training program, the 240 hours of relevant instruction can be counted towards the total hours.

Q. Can the CHW training be included in the apprenticeship hours if a training program was already completed?

A. If the CHW apprentice has already completed an approved training program, the 240 hours of relevant instruction can be counted towards the total hours.

Q. Can previous experience be counted towards the apprenticeship hours?

A. Yes, with documentation, up to 600 hours of previous work can be counted towards the total hours.

Q. What if the CHW apprentice will not be doing all of the CHW apprenticeship competencies within their role?

A. Unfortunately all competencies must be met in order to participate in the apprenticeship program. If an individual does not meet these competencies, there may be a better apprenticeship program available for them to utilize.

Q. What reporting is required for the apprenticeship program?

A. All CHW apprenticeship programs must report to the CHWSD upon completion of the training program (if applicable), at 90 days, at 6 months, and upon completion of the apprenticeship program.

Q. Is there a limit to the number of apprentices a program can have at a time?

A. A program may have up to 5 apprentices per year. Keep in mind that the apprenticeship program requires a 1 to 1 ratio for an apprentice to journey worker (mentor).

Q. Who can be a journey worker (mentor)?

A. The journey worker (mentor) for a CHW apprentice ideally should be a Certified CHW, but could also be someone who is at the same level or higher, such as a nurse or social worker. For questions regarding who could be a journey worker, please email Ben at ben@chwsd.org.
