Overview

As the Community Health Worker (CHW) profession is new to South Dakota, the CHWSD is working diligently to ensure that the profession is introduced as a new position that compliments existing positions. When a CHW begins working within an organization, individuals in certain positions may be able to shift some of their duties to the CHW. This allows the individual shifting work to the CHW (i.e. a registered nurse shifting patient coordination work to a CHW) to work at the top of their license.
Additionally, an individual may cross-train as a CHW to expand the services they are able to provide within an organization. Some examples of positions that may cross-train as a CHW include a CNA or an EMT. This cross-training within a position has many benefits and allows an individual to broaden their scope of work and services they are able to provide. Cross-training positions can also help to sustain full-time employment for individuals in smaller communities where a full-time CHW position might not be attainable.
