Completing a Community Health Worker (CHW) Training Certificate Program confirms that an individual has finished the required training coursework. Certification as a CHW is a separate, state-specific process that requires additional steps beyond training completion.

Purpose

The purpose of the CHW and CHR certification process is to:

  • Ensure the CHW and CHR professionals have the required credentials for Medicaid reimbursement.
  • Professionalize the CHW and CHR workforce by certifying each professional meets the education and background check standards as set forth by CHWSD, the South Dakota Department of Health, and South Dakota Department of Social Services – Division of Medicaid.
  • Aid CHW and CHR employers to validate the professionals and workforce so they can integrate and leverage them into their care teams.
  • Evaluate the CHW and CHR workforce regionally and statewide in order to inform CHWSD and partners to make meaningful interventions to keep the profession sustainable and relevant.

Medicaid Reimbursement

As of January 1, 2023 South Dakota Medicaid recognizes certified CHW’s as a reimbursable service provider. This means that CHWs and CHRs will need to become certified if their organization is looking to receive Medicaid reimbursement for services provided.
